Emergency Preparedness
What Is Emergency Preparedness (E-Prep) & Why It Matters
Emergency Preparedness, or E-Prep, refers to the planning, resources, and training that help individuals and organizations—like schools—prevent, respond to, and recover from unexpected events, whether natural disasters or human-caused emergencies.
For schools, the benefits are significant:
- It helps keep schools operating during crises or enables them to reopen swiftly.
- It protects students and staff from physical and emotional harm.
- It ensures clear communication and orderly response when every second counts—for instance, during evacuations or reunification.
Preparation supports both immediate safety and long-term mental health and learning outcomes.
E-Prep is relevant to our school community because it:
- Keeps kids safe and reassures parents and staff.
- Builds resilience so the school can continue supporting students—even during stressful or disruptive events.
- Empowers everyone—from administrators to volunteers—to act effectively if emergencies arise.
Local Resources to Support Emergency Preparedness
Here are some excellent, locally relevant resources to help you out:
Comfort Kits
We ask every Rockwell family to prepare a Comfort Kit for their child. These kits are kept in the classroom and will be used if an emergency or disaster requires students to remain at school for an extended period of time.
The goal of a Comfort Kit is to provide children with a sense of security and reassurance during what could be a stressful or uncertain situation.
Please send your child’s Comfort Kit to their classroom teacher by Friday, September 26. Instructions, including a ziplock bag are in the Back to School paperwork sent home with your child. Questions? Email eprep@normanrockwellpta.org
